Reiki FAQs

 What is Reiki

Reiki is a meditative, spiritual practice that supports healing and personal development. It is a simple and safe method of bringing awareness of the Universal life force energy that flows through us, enabling us to connect to our true essence.

 Is Reiki a religion?

Reiki is not a religion. It is spiritual in nature and often enhances one's personal religious beliefs.

How is a Reiki treatment given?

Reiki is administered through the hands with the client lying fully clothed on a massage table or sitting in a chair. A Reiki practitioner's hands are lightly touching or slightly away from the body. Tissue is not manipulated. A Reiki session usually lasts 45-60 minutes. Although, some sessions may last longer.

What should I wear for a Reiki Session?

Wear comfortable clothing. Nothing too restricting or binding.

Do I stop seeing my regular doctor or psychologist?

Reiki does not replace conventional medicine. Please continue to see your healthcare professional for any medical condition. Reiki works in harmony with all other forms of healing, including drugs, surgery, psychological care, or any other method of alternative care.

 Who can learn Reiki?

Anyone can learn Reiki. It is simple and easy to learn. Contact us for more information.

What does a Reiki treatment feel like?

It is difficult to describe the sensations since they vary from person to person and each session is different as well. However, feelings of deep relaxation and well-being are usually described by most people. Many clients feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through them. Some people may drift off to sleep. Others may have an out-of-body experience. Usually, one will leave a Reiki session feeling refreshed, renewed, grounded, centered, and filled with inner-peace and well-being.

 Who can receive Reiki?

Everyone can receive a Reiki treatment—young and old, pregnant women, the disabled, the terminally ill, and even babies! Anyone who is looking for relief from physical and psychological ailments can receive a Reiki treatment. There are no contraindications with Reiki. Reiki helps to promote wellness from within and enabling one to let go of anything that no longer serves us.

Simple, Natural, Safe

Reiki enables mind, body, and spiritual wellness, as well as self-improvement. Each session allows a wonderful feeling of glowing radiance to flow through the client, enabling the wellness process. This produces a peaceful and relaxing way of achieving a sense of well-being. One must experience the wonders of a Reiki session to truly understand what Reiki is and does. Schedule one for yourself today.

Shubumi

Courses and Events

The concept of Shibumi was developed by Frans Stiene and Bronwen Logan (Stiene), founders of the International House of Reiki, who perceived a need for Reiki practitioners to be members of an association that directly reflected their Reiki practice.

These Reiki practitioners include not only students of the International House of Reiki but others who are drawn to practice and teach from a Japanese perspective. Shibumi standards and codes have been developed with these Reiki practitioners in mind as a way to support them in defining what it means to practice from a Japanese perspective.

The Membership Levels and Codes of Reiki Practice and Reiki Ethics are also there to provide prospective clients and students with the opportunity to understand what they can expect from a Shibumi registered certified Reiki Practitioner and Reiki Practitioner/Teacher.

Shibumi International Reiki Association is an Exempt, Non-Profit organization under IRS section 501(c)(3), Public Charity status 509(a)(2), and eligible to receive tax-deductible donations, with an effective date of exemption of 26 May 2009.

Shibumi Mission & Vision

Mission

To support and promote the Japanese art of the system of Reiki through providing:

  • Education for Reiki practitioners and the general public with clear and detailed information regarding the system of Reiki and the roles of practitioners and teachers
  • Quality standards for Reiki practitioners and teachers
  • Membership for Reiki practitioners who practice from a Japanese perspective
  • Research into the benefits and history of the system of Reiki

Vision

Envisioning a world where the system of Reiki is respected, understood and utilized as a Japanese practice that was developed by Mikao Usui to promote self-healing and personal growth through spiritual discipline.

Envisioning the use of the system in family life and business life, as personal and corporate relaxation along with complete integration into a modern healthcare system.

A healthcare system that is flexible and open and comprehends that well being and good health rely on wholeness. And it is wholeness that the system of Reiki helps one to develop and live.

Shibumi Philosophy

Five things Shibumi has found to be true

  • Pursuing the origins is pursuing a Truth

The system of Reiki has become known as a wide variety of practices – but do these practices actually relate back to the understandings of the system's founder Mikao Usui? Shibumi focuses on the roots of the system of Reiki, finding in them a strong foundation and inherent depth of knowledge and Truth. The security that practitioners feel from confidence in the Truthfulness of their practice aids the strength of their intent and therefore the quality of their practice.

  • High standards create quality practitioners and teachers

The philosophy of Shibumi is to ask its members to adhere to specific criteria that are aligned to the Japanese influences of the system rather than new age influences. By agreeing to this, Shibumi members create a foundation of purpose and integrity for the practice that has been diminishing over the years. A high standard of membership is one of the hallmarks of Shibumi's philosophy.

  • Everyone needs community

Shibumi membership offers community to those dedicated to following the spiritual practices of the system of Reiki from a Japanese perspective. Community supports and encourages members to continue their personal practice and provides a safe environment for questioning and discussion (elements necessary for continued growth).

  • Practice what you preach

Shibumi members are role models for the system of Reiki from a Japanese perspective and this is reflected in how they teach, practice and live.

  • It's about getting the word out there

Reiki practitioners know that their lives have changed since they began working with the system of Reiki. Shibumi supports getting the word out there – whether it be through the media, outstanding Reiki services, personal connections or research. Shibumi aims to support research that can help people to understand the benefits of the practice without harming any living being in the process.

Trained by the International House of Reiki

Today the International House of Reiki is a Reiki center that teaches the system of Reiki from a Japanese perspective in a number of countries around the globe.

The center teaches all three levels of the system of Reiki under their Japanese names of Shoden Level I, Okuden Level II, and Shinpiden Level III. The center holds Reiki Retreats; Virtual Practice Evenings for Students; Online Courses and sends out regular online e-newsletters as well as hosting an extensive Student Website.

Yet, the center's beginnings were in a remote region of the world, the Himalayas. Frans and Bronwen Stiene are the founders of the center, and began teaching the system of Reiki in Darjeeling, India in 1998. They lived there for a year, teaching and treating people under the auspices of Reiki House. In 1999, they moved to Australia where the International House of Reiki officially began and there they seriously started researching the system from a Japanese perspective. This included travel to Japan and Europe to define the system's origins. This took a number of years as the center's reputation grew in Australia. It was during this time the first of a number of research books, The Reiki Sourcebook, was published internationally to critical acclaim.

By 2004 the centre was teaching in Europe, North America, Australia and, eventually, Asia. Today Frans Stiene is based in Holland and teaches and travels from there, while Bronwen Logan (Stiene) runs the Tomah Retreat from the Blue Mountains outside Sydney in Australia.

The International House of Reiki is honoured to be able to teach a traditional Japanese system of Reiki called Usui Reiki Ryoho. Usui Reiki Ryoho means Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Method. Frans and Bronwen have formed their teachings under this name as they teach a non-Westernized form of Reiki which attempts to return to the very source of Usui Mikao's teachings. It has been practiced in Japan since the early 1900s, long before the system of Reiki left Japan. This particular method includes physical and energy enhancing exercises to help practitioners delve deeper into their Reiki practice. The earlier teachings consider the system not just to be a hands-on-healing practice but one that also focuses on a student's spiritual path.

This international Reiki centre prides itself on its professionalism, student support systems and strong ethics. Other books by its founders are the critically acclaimed The Japanese Art of Reiki, A-Z of Reiki Pocketbook, Reiki Techniques Card Deck and Your Reiki Treatment.

All teachers of the center are active members of the Reiki community and are members of Shibumi International Reiki Association founded by Frans and Bronwen Stiene.

It is possible to invite teachers of the International House of Reiki to come to your area to teach. We have special sponsoring deals for organizers to support them in organizing and promoting the courses.

What our customers are saying

  • Irene from Wauconda

I highly recommend Patty's reiki class. Her loving commitment along with her incredible gift of teaching made me feel comfort, warmth and love in such a safe, open space. I am truly blessed to have had her guidance and genuine care to bring me further along my journey! Reiki hugs!

    • Irene Salman - Wauconda, Illinois

  • Christine from Round Lake

First and foremost, I want to thank you for being a thoughtful and educational instructor. I wasn’t sure what to expect and you allayed any fears that I had. Your style was calm and reassuring. You made me feel comfortable to ask questions, no matter how silly they were, and explained the answers that didn’t belittle me.

Next, I want to express the profound changes in myself that I have experienced since going through and completing the training. I have noticed I’m much more calm and relaxed. I suffer from anxiety from time to time that causes a lot of sweating. I’m not as anxious or sweaty now. I also don’t speed like I used to. I don’t get super frustrated at cars that are in front of me doing the speed limit or going slower than me. I’ve noticed a tremendous improvement in my stamina with regard to vigorous exercise. What once would have me out of breath in mere seconds I can now do for minutes. I’m so thankful for that. I’m confident that the more I continue to practice self-healing that I will notice more positive improvements in myself.

I know that my journey has just begun.  I’m glad I was able to start the journey with you. I look forward to our continued path of practicing, learning and evolving.

    Kind regards,

Christine Cwikla - Round Lake, IL
